The fault seems to be with dpkg; gzip and corrupt compressed data are regular
messages on my box.
All of the suggestions that this might be similar to have the same
message - one is closed, the others all invalid. So I suppose I'm still
on my own ... I cannot clean, update,install or remove anything, using
apt-get; software centre or update-manager
(Reading database ... 186405 files and directories currently installed.)
