Carried out
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
as requested.
GRUB-loaded 3.13.0-24 as I assumed the above simply upgraded that release.
uname -a showed
Linux ubuntu-1 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:30:00 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Altered the tag to shw #47 instead of #46
Still the same error in syslog.
Does Ubuntu need an HTC plugin to support the One as an MTP device ?
