Today a package upgrade to whoopsie in 14.04 is also triggering the
same missing init.d script problem.

Preparing to unpack .../whoopsie_0.2.24.6_i386.deb ...
invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/whoopsie not found.
dpkg: warning: subprocess old pre-removal script returned error exit status 100
dpkg: trying script from the new package instead ...
invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/whoopsie not found.
dpkg: error processing archive
/var/cache/apt/archives/whoopsie_0.2.24.6_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 100
invoke-rc.d: unknown initscript, /etc/init.d/whoopsie not found.
/bin/df: no file systems processed
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 100
Preparing to unpack .../libwhoopsie0_0.2.24.6_i386.deb ...
[...]
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/whoopsie_0.2.24.6_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
[...]
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a
solution).

I assume the same hack of editing the pre/post inst/rm scripts to exit with a
warning and 0 exit code instead of $? can temporarily work around it.
