seems like you and Benjamin have already worked out most of this. Have
you also tried out the "Prefetch" option in the settings dialog? It
should make qpdfview prefetch to upcoming pages in both forward and
backward directions with the range being controlled by the "Prefetch
distance" setting.
Concerning automatically changing the cache size is quite a problem
since we would need to account for the current memory usage (there is no
portable API for that) and we would have to disable it by default anyway
since we can't know how much of his or her memory the user is willing to
dedicate to qpdfview's cache. So I am not really sold on the idea,
especially since tiled rendering, c.f. bug regard #1329087, should
reduce the problem somewhat and we always chose to depend on the user
adjusting the settings to his or her needs.
Concerning the state of this bug report, I'll consider it a support
request and mark it invalid. But thanks for taking the time to report
