Ok so it's actually working now (for a value of working where you run a
shell in a window).

You're just missing the scopes, which you can start by `initctl start
smart-scopes-proxy`.

You could also try running unity8 via upstart `initctl start unity8
ARGS=-mousetouch`, which would set the environment properly.

In any case, maybe you should just try the desktop session instead?
