In addition, whenever this machine has a problem trying any of the different apt-get methods of repair, re-install, force or upgrades the clock stops and the machine slowly becomes very unresponsive. Things that have any timing dependencies do not show anything. If I put "top" in a terminal, there is nothing returned. It just hangs. Email does not get delivered and any WM on the server hangs. I can't even "sudo shutdown -h now" from a different tty. The only way to get the machine back online is a hard reboot. (Hold the power button in for 5 seconds) Once it comes back online, the hard reboot has to be performed about 8 hours later. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. Once the machine is back up, I can very carefully get any file and post it here.
