This is mostly the same as I have experienced (and still do) on a
Thinkpad x60s.

It all started after a "aptitude upgrade" sometime sunday (GMT+1) two
weeks ago, and also after I (for other reasons) did a full reinstall
with Gutsy (tribe5) yesterday.

I'm not quite sure if it is totally random because it happens almost
everytime I try to resize a xterm window with the mouse, cursor is then
"looked" in "resize mode", but I can still move it. I can't remember to
have seen this when not resizing a xterm.

The only way I can get out of the "freeze" is by doing a hard shutdown
(aka pulling the plug), when I start the computer again after that
compiz is up but I have to do a "emerald --replace &" to get emerald up.

I have not tried to ssh in while in "freeze", I can try that next time
it happens, but as I consider "pulling the plug" a pretty fatal action I
don't want to do it more than absolutely necessary.

And yes it only happens with Compiz activated.
