I started with commit c40e36... and worked back according to the git
log. The last 'good' build was fb72a0... The next commit breaks it.

What is the next step?

aside: was I using Git bisect incorrectly? Shouldn't it have brought me
here automatically? Using version numbers was a waste of time as ubuntu
was using a yet lower version mumber than was visible when using the
mainline kernel. The commits got me closer to the bad commit.
