The following from a resumed-to Ctrl-Alt-F2 text console results in the
same sort of crashes, so the cause seems to be something other than
(only) the display auto(re)detection:

chvt 7
xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00"  173.00  1920 2048 2248 2576  1080 1083 1088 
1120 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DFP-1 "1920x1080_60.00"

The final crash hit so hard it corrupted all of /dev/sda's file systems
(requiring to press F on each to even reboot).

Looks a lot like https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35648 back
with a vengeance.
