Public bug reported:
I was installing kubuntu Gutsy tribes 5.
The machine came with Vista and two partions. The second partion was an
extend partition and this is the one I wanted to install ubuntu onto, I
used manual partiotning option to select the partition. The grub install
failed with an error message about not being able to read the stage1
file.
When I used gparted to delete the partion and told the install to use
free space it worked.
