Public bug reported:
I have Asus A8S-X motherboard and Geforce 6600 GT on Ubuntu 7.04.
I have tried installing Nvidia drivers using Ubuntu's restricted
modules, Envy and manually downloading and installing from the NVidia's
website. I have also tried asking help from #ubuntu and #linux irc
channels but none of the suggested methods has helped.
The problem is that installing the drivers goes OK. The xorg.conf has
the "nvidia" driver setupped as it should (confirmed by a person from
#linux) and X starts with no errors and works perfectly, except for the
3D acceleration.
Also if I start nvidia-settings a message box appears: "You do not
appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration
file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. " (I
have tried the suggested method, but it doesn't help.)
I'm not a noob with Linux. I have been using Linux for about 7 years from which
1,5 years as my only desktop and server. I think the problem is with the
motherboard and PCI-Express, but I would like that someone could confirm this
and tell
a) Could it be fixed by software or
b) Do I need to buy a new motherboard. And if so, which motherboard that might
be.
