Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xorg
Performing an Xorg Quick test.
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu4
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.192-1ubuntu1
Ati mobility radeon 9700 64MB agp 4x
3) X comes up normally
4) The maximum resolution is correctly detected, but there are some resolutions
that are not ok for my 15" monitor: 1280x800 (which is 19:10 I think) and
1280x768. The other resolutions are ok: 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480
5) xrandr recognizes all the connected outputs (LVDS S-Video)
S-video test (SAMSUNG LCD TV):
the S-video output is 800x600 but the TV shows a truncated image (bottom and
right), because the primary resolution is 1400x1050
if I set the resolution at 800x600 in the primary screen, the image in the
TV disappear and I have to run xrandr --auto again
the image is less truncated, and only at right, only a dozen of pixels
(might be a problem of the tv)
VGA-0 test 1280x1024: the desktop is truncated too. I could not test
1280x1024 if the primary monitor because it does not list it (bug).
So, If the secondary monitor has a different resolution than the primary
monitor, the desktop is not visualized well:
- if the primary resolution is bigger, the secondary monitor has a
truncated desktop
- if the primary resolution is smaller, the secondary monitor has a small
desktop, though the rest of the space can be used, but the panels are placed as
if the screen was smaller, and of course if I put a window in "out" space, it
cannot be viewed in the primary monitor.
The expected result would be that the desktop automatically fits the screen.
xrandr rotation and reflection:
reflection does not work, the output is = xrandr: output LVDS cannot use
rotation "normal" reflection "X and Y axis"
rotation completely hangs the system:

6) The CPU usage on system inactivity is quite null
7) The video ~/Examples/Experience ubuntu.ogg is only shown in the primary
monitor (totem, vlc, kaffeine) and the CPU usage is 20~30% either in windowed
mode and fullscreen. Either with and without other monitors connected
8) the CPU usage in flash webpages (without scrolling) is very high: 50% with
flashplugin-nonfree and 100% with gnash on asus.com
starcraft2 website reaches 80% of cpu usage (without scrolling) with
flashplugin-nonfree, when scrolling everything becomes veryveryvery slow and
jerky. 100% of cpu usage, and other apps become slow too.
Non-flash pages really scroll smoother, but the CPU usage is near to 100%
Instead pages with a static background, such as
http://www.oakparkfoundation.org/ are really a shame during the scroll.
Everything is jerky.
I think that this is an *important* bug to fix. This bug was present since
the previous versions of xorg and ati driver.
9) glxinfo reports no errors, glxgears works with a frame rate of 1900, but
with a cpu usage of 44%.
The problem is instead that other games crash because the resolution that
the new xrandr allocates fills the video RAM. upstream suggests to add an xorg
option: Virtual 1400 1050 (which is my resolution) in the dusplay subsetcion of
screen. This lets games run.
games are displayed not only in the primary screen. good!
I think that games and glxgears are using too much cpu comparing with fglrx.
10) compiz fusion works only if Virtual 1400 1050 is added. The performance is
quite bad because it really falls down on the minimum CPU usage, opposite to
metacity.
11) video works in totem, and the cpu usage is the same as compiz was disabled.
The output is again only in the primary screen.
12) the cpu usage in the asus page is 72%, in starcraft2 page is 88%. of course
scrolling is really slow, even in normal pages.
13) glxinfo and glxgears have no problems, the frame rate is a bit lower: 1750.
The 3d image is shown not only in the primary screen. Unfortunately games do
not work unless we reserve more memory to GART. the default is 8MB but it is
suggested do have 64MB. We need Option "GartSize" "64" in the Device section.
games are influenced by compiz: sometimes the image flickers a bit (I
tested ppracer, supertux, neverball) in the place where the gnome system
monitor applet resides. Another applet that I have not identified flickers too
other tests: stressing the cpu has no effect if running metacity. compiz
instead is really influenced by cpu usage. Games are influenced by cpu usage
too.
other things I've found: too much cpu usage on games: ppracer has 70% of cpu
usage. some games (smc) require the dri option "Disable low impact fallback".
