Public bug reported:

I upgraded python-matplotlib and then received this error.

root@ecampbell300:/# python
Python 2.7.5+ (default, Sep 19 2013, 13:48:49)
[GCC 4.8.1] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import matplotlib
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
  File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.7/matplotlib/__init__.py", line 129, in
<module>
    "matplotlib requires pyparsing >= 1.5.6")
ImportError: matplotlib requires pyparsing >= 1.5.6

Upgrading python-pyparsing fixed it.
