Thanks for this very useful email. Having checked all of my memory I found that one of my RAM sticks, capable of being 1Mb was actually 256 Kb. When I replaced that most of my problems went away. Firefox only crashes about once a month now. Update manager works without problems now. Bootup blank screen ancient history. I solved the `apt-get update` problem by selecting "main", updating, and then reverting to "Nantes".

But following the ensuing instructions cleared my package management system block! I have now completed the installations of chromium-browser, samba and wine as well ... Phew!
