Thanks for this very useful email.

Having checked all of my memory I found that one of my RAM sticks,
capable of being 1Mb was actually 256 Kb. When I replaced that most of
my problems went away. Firefox only crashes about once a month now.
Update manager works without problems now. Bootup blank screen ancient
history. I solved the `apt-get update` problem by selecting "main",
updating, and then reverting to "Nantes".

I got a new update for chromium-browser in update-manager, which failed! But 
following the ensuing instructions cleared my package management system block! 
I have now completed the installations of chromium-browser, samba and wine as 
well ... Phew!

I still have outstanding problems with my graphics, my bootup blank
screen, FireFox crashes ...

Mine seems to be a very flaky system, but I have discovered that SiS is
not as well supported for drivers as perhaps some other chipsets are ...

Thanks for taking the time to contact me. I shall certainly follow your
advice about fsck and memory test.
