I can repeat this loss of search results like this: 1) Open synaptic (0.57.11.1ubuntu14) 2) Click Search, type "nfs" (for example) 3) Click "Edit"->"Unmark All" in the menu at the top. 4) The search results are gone All that's left in the left bar is "All" and "nfs".
