I have also made that change to the /etc/default/grub file and changed GRUB_DEFAULT=0 to GRUB_DEFAULT=1 then ran sudo update-grub
So far after several boots the error message has not reappeared. I realise this is something of a workaround and not a real solution, but it does appear to work.
