Before that (as I do need some usable system every once in a while), installed the year-old elementaryOS.org Luna as a lightweight Ubuntu 12.04 LTS derivative.
Had to use both https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsbo /#Option_1_-_console.3Dtty1 and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsVideoCardsPoulsbo/#Fix_suspend to avoid distorted video on boot & resume, but other than that things do work (including lid switch) on that older LTS.
