I can confirm that I was having the same issue as well.  I followed the
instructions about hiding the global menu, and I have not had any
problems as of yet.  I could not right-click the indicator applet
though, I had to right-click the panel, click on panel, then click on
Panel Preferences, then select the Items tab, then select Indicator
Applet, and then click on the notepad & pen icon to edit it, and then I
could put a check mark next to Application Menus (Global Menus) to hide
it.  Then I restarted the panel using the command in the terminal.  I am
running Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty LTS.  I hope this helps others as well.
