Sadly I am unable to perform the BIOS update, as flashrom complains that 
"Management Engine region is locked",
FreeDOS crashes with a "Interrupt divide by zero" immediately on booting, and I 
don't have access to windows. I guess I'll have to live with the workaround for 
now.

Fixing the problem should however not require a BIOS update, as the bug
is a regression (Ubuntu Precise did not suffer from it, until some
update introduced the problem). I of course understand that the BIOS
upgrade might still have fixed the problem (if the earlier working
condition involved two wrongs making a right), and that you want to test
on an up-to-date BIOS to avoid unnecessary work, but unfortunately I can
not help you help me.
