I do encounter this bug as well on my Smart Ativ 700. To be more specific :
* With Ubuntu 14.04, you could not control the brightness with the keyboard, 
but you could do it manually by adjusting the brightness setting in the control 
panel
* With Ubuntu 14.10 daily, you can control the brightness, but you can not go 
brighter than what the light sensor finds the "most effictive". For example, if 
I'm in a dark room, I can only turn off the screen, but cannot make the screen 
brighter.

Tried with kernel 3..16 final from the PPA above, no improvement.
