The easiest way I know of for you to test the 3.16 driver with 3.13 is
by using the drivers from the backports project. Unfortunately there is
no prebuilt version for Ubuntu, so you'll have to manually build and
install the drivers. If you want to give this a try see

Ultimately if 3.16 gives a more stable connection than 3.13 I'd like to
backport the relevant changes to 3.13, but the problem is that I don't
know yet which changes need to be backported. If it were only due to the
-9 firmware then I believe that's easily backported to 3.13, but based
on your results so far that doesn't seem to be the case.
