Providing easy to use but insecure defaults is to a large extent what got Microsoft into their security mess. I believe this issue is best resolved by either asking your organization to route traffic between their vpn endpoint and the internet, or using the network-manager vpn configuration dialog to only route traffic through the vpn for certain networks.
