I suspect I'm affected by this issue too. It started after the upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04. However, directly after the upgrade the behaviour was a bit different compared to the bug description. Booting into the desktop the screen was black except for the line of launcher icons to the left. Moving the mouse over the any of the launcher icons would reveal the desktop, but as soon as I moved the mouse back onto the desktop it went black again.
After some trial and error I managed to switch to "Low graphics mode" (using unsettings). This reversed the behaviour so that it now behaves as described in this bug report. The desktop and launcher is works fine but as soon as I move the mouse cursor over any of the launcher icons and let it linger until the "tooltip" text with the name of the application is shown the desktop goes black. The desktop going black seems to be directly linked to the "tooltip" text showing. Quickly moving the cursor over the launcher icons will trigger the bug. However lingering log enough for the "tooltip" to be shown, or right-click on an icon to show its menu, will immediately cause the desktop to go black. My computer is also equipped with a Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1319075 Title: Dark screen when stopping mouse on launcher icons or launching app To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1319075/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
