I have the same problem. I just got a Geforce 8800GTS and usplash does not appear (my monitor goes to out of sync and sleep mode). Doesn't matter if I use nvidia or nv open source drivers. It happens both in Feisty and Gutsy.
It used to work fine with my 6600GT, and it still does.
