It is entirely possible that your Laptop LCD doesn't actually have 24bpp
(8 bits per channel) colour. Many LCDs, although they claim to support
24bpp colour, actually use 6 bits per channel internally. Since your
external LCD doesn't display these artifacts it suggests this may be the
explaination.
Just to be sure, could you please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file,
preferably with both internal & external LCDs on. It would also be
useful if you could test under other drivers (the i810 drivers) and
maybe even other operating systems, if possible.
