Most of these problems were fixed by replacing NetworkManager with WICD. NetworkManager was actually losing the connection with the printers, even though I could surf the net all day long.
Note to self: Never, never, never leave the default NetworkManager installed. I am still seeing "Filter Failed" with most PDF's on the OKI.
