In this particular case, I think the right behavior would be to track down which changeset fixes the bug and then apply just that to beta6, then release an updated package via the backports tree. Upgrading from Gaim to Pidgin during a stable release would be a very bad idea: ABI compatibility was broken, we had massive code changes in a short period of time, etc.
