mpt, that doesn't seem to me a reason why we can't have a drop down area for 
legacy apps. Yes their behaviour will be unpredictable for Ubuntu but it would 
still work for legacy apps. 
I run a corporate repository for 6000 users and we are having to fix each unity 
version so our corporate apps work, or we have to move to RedHat. The corporate 
owners have no interest in fixing the apps for Ubuntu, and won't give out 
source code, so they won't be updated unless they move to a new library which 
does it for them (which is equally unlikely)
