Just to add my findings to this, the i915 fault also appears on a
Ubuntu-Mate install but apparently recovers from it to log-in and run
correctly.

Fully working boot using 3.13.0-34.60 kernel, otherwise fully updated Ubuntu 
Utopic

(Conclusion - i915 failure with current kernel. Boot fails to 'wallpaper only' 
after login.)

Working boot on Ubuntu-Mate install, same machine, using 3.16.0-11.16 kernel
