I just tried reproducing this on a different machine with an Intel
Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 04) nic, and it
worked.
My problematic machine has Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation
82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 05) which differs only in
revision number.
So hopefully this is quite a bit more isolated than I originally
believed.
