Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
We cannot update 14.04 to the latest PHP version because my understanding is that they include feature changes in minor version updates, and this is unacceptable for Ubuntu's stable release users who expect behaviour to not change during the lifetime of a stable Ubuntu release. If I'm wrong about this and there's an upstream policy that says otherwise, please do correct me. However, we can cherry-pick bugfixes from PHP's stable branch, but I don't see a reference to any fix in the upstream bug. Please can you point me to the fix in PHP's stable branch VCS?
