I think I incurred in the same problem. I've just built a git 3.17
kernel (as a task of the eudyptula challenge) and when trying it, it
crashes after a while (i generally just manage to login) if I have my
usb wifi dongle inserted. Without the wifi dongle, no problems.

I don't have a screen of the error, maybe I can get it, but it certainly
"ended" with `Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed! and mentioned
ath9k_hw_scan (which seems like it has been introduced recently:
http://markmail.org/message/fyjhuk4zo7vusbru and could be the problem.
