furthermore, since ffmpeg was purged from ubuntu, even
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg was removed from the repos when ubuntu decided to
endorse libav instead.

which is perfectly fine with me, but why the need to remove even
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg which did and still provides an INTERNAL ffmpeg
implementation and DOES NOT depend on ffmpeg?
which problem did it create that justified its removal from ubuntu?

either the developer falsely assumed from its name that the package
depended on the deprecated ffmpeg package, or this was done only for
policy reasons (hatred against the forked project).

the change was justified saying that gstreamer1.0-libav was available,
but as this bug states many packages are not going to be ported to gst1
any time soon (in python, this would also require porting the app from
GTK2 to GTK3 and gobject).

many webradio stations are making use of codecs formerly provided by
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and as a result, radiotray in 14.04 fails silently
to play audio from those. the only workaround as of now is to manually
build the package from upstream.
