Error messages such as:

   Error fsyncing/closing /dev/sdb: Remote I/O error
Remote I/O error during write on /dev/sdb

often imply a hardware problem. This can be as simple as a loose cable,
all the way up to a failing hard drive.

If the drive supports smart monitoring, you can use the graphical
application "gsmartcontrol" to check on the health of the disk device.
