Yes, this was apparently a deliberate change to the "Find in page"
search box behavior.  I'm not too fond of that change myself, but the
people who made it had good reasons for it, unfortunately.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/findbar-tweak/ may let
you produce a behavior more to your liking (or not; I haven't actually
tried it myself).

Frankly, I would be more likely to tell you if I thought you'd then go
and read the relevant bug to find out why they did it.  Since I'm pretty
sure what you'll do instead is go curse at them, I don't think enabling
that would be a good idea.
