I'm using now apt 1.0.9.1ubuntu1 and noticing that there is the option
--list-cleanup that does this job. On testing this I'm also noticing
that this is the default behavior on Ubuntu 14.10 and that all my
obsolete package lists got successfully automatic deleted. But it would
be nice if this option would also be callable as own subcommand but I
will create another ticket for this.
** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu)
