I contacted the guy who produced the patch above, and he said it's been incorporated into release r527. Ubuntu's still on r512 - so it's available for the taking. I guess this isn't a bug then - just a question. How and when does Ubuntu decide to update the version of a package they include. Is this just a question of taking what Debian decides to include, or does Ubuntu get involved as well?
