** Description changed:

I am using the 3.16.3 kernel and Mesa/drivers/Xorg from the Oibaf PPA -
but this also happens when using drivers from the regular repositories.

I can leave the computer to lock itself, or lock it by pressing
Ctrl+Alt+L, and it power off the monitor after a few seconds (blue LED
turns yellow), and then if I wait a minute - I will not be able to wake
it up by moving the mouse or pressing any key. Switching to a TTY
doesn't work either, but the keyboard is responding (can turn caps lock
  on/off).

I have to restart the computer to get it in a working state after this
  happens.

I would say that this bug is SEVERE, because you can lose important
  work.

On proprietary AMD drivers (fglrx) - this works. Also, it worked on the
  3.13 kernel (default)

- - graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 7790
- - monitor: HP ZR2330w
+ EDIT: interestingly enough, suspending and resuming works fine. Only
+ switching off the monitor doesn't. I will try another monitor model
+ tomorrow and report back - but since the monitor works with other
+ drivers I don't think the monitor is causing these issues.
