Let me clarify again exactly what is happening. When no CD or DVD is in either of my drives, both do not show up in the places menu and in the mount applet -> fine. When a CD is in the CD or DVD drive, the corresponding drive does show up in the places menu and in the mount applet -> also fine When a DVD is in the DVD drive, that drive does not show up in the places menu and in the mount applet -> absolutely not fine.
