When you say "the only way to do anything", do you mean the system has
hard locked?  Can you hit ctrl-alt-f1 to get to a VT?  If not, can you
start the installation, jump to a VT and wait until the installer seems
to stop (I'd tail -f /var/log/installer/debug, see below)?

If you can get the system in a state where you can copy files away after
the partitioner hangs, can you please run the installer again,
preferably one of the daily live CDs, using the --debug option
(`ubiquity --debug` in a terminal window), and attach /var/log/syslog,
/var/log/installer/debug, and /var/log/partman to this bug report?
