Further, clicking an https:// link will cause Thunderbird to go into a state where it uses around 12% of the CPU (on my system) and starts touching the hard drive every 1/2 second. Once in this state, Thunderbird will not close properly, and must be killed with kill -15 after the GUI has been closed.
