I have to correct myself.

"I have to launch an application first otherwise the resolution falls back down
to 1920." <<< that is not correct:
the issue seems also to be time related. If I wait after logging in the
resolution will be more probable accepted.

Additionally some applications seem to make it impossible to get the
higher resolution (for example HipChat). On the start the resolution
will fall back immediately and it is impossible to increase it as long
as the application is open.

On applications like eog or the ubuntu system settings, the resolution
will also fallback to the lower, but after execution the xrandr-commands
again, the resolution will be accepted by the system.
