I've recently removed my system and done a clean install of ubuntustudio (although I have kept my old home directory) and I no longer experience this problem. The version of mc I am using now is 4.6.1-7ubuntu1. The version I was using when I reported this problem was whichever was whichever one was current in the feisty repository when I reported it.
