Albert, thanks for that survey of how various systems meet Requirement
2.2. I'm fairly confident in my design for that, though, so I'm much
more interested in how they meet Requirement 2.1. :-)
I understand that 2.1 is much more difficult to implement (regardless of
whether it's done in the driver or in pulseaudio), so it may make sense
to split this into two bug reports.
