The vast majority of 32-bit build problems on 64-bit platforms can be
mitigated by simply creating the missing:

libfoo.so.2.2 --> libfoo.so.2
libfoo.so.2 --> libfoo.so

symlinks upon install of ia32-libs.

In my humble opinion, Unbuntu development is spending more effort
defending the fact that you don't support 32-bit builds on 64-bit
systems than you would spend just bloody fixing the problem in the first
place!

There are issues going back over 2 years pertaining to this.  For gawd's
sake, just update the package to create the stupid symlinks!  You can
still brush off complaints with a "..we don't support blah, blah.."
response, but it will fix about 99% of the issues.

There, I've said it.  Have a nice one!
