This solved it for me:
I uninstalled virtualbox:
$ sudo apt-get remove virtualbox
The following packages will be REMOVED:
virtualbox virtualbox-dkms virtualbox-qt
I made sure dkms is installed:
$ sudo apt-get install dkms
and installed VirtualBox 4.3:
$ sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.3
The existing virtualboxes and settings were not removed during this
process, and everything seems to work fine. In fact, my WIndows guest
seems to load faster now.
