With "debconf hint" I mean a hint which is displayed at installation and
says that zeitgeist/privacy has to be configured in order to make
`diodon` work the know way because now the default configuration after
installation does nothing (which is why I thought the package was
broken). Maybe that can be acchieved by detecting the first run
otherwise.

The other points are noted, thanks for the detailed answer. I agree that
an infinite history based on XML storage isn't a good idea, but it
doesn't say that all choisable storage backends have to provide the same
features (including infinite history), does it?
