Running Lubuntu 14.04.1, I recently had an issue similar to the one
described in the top post. In my case it is my belief the effect in
gparted was caused by trying to read a MicroSDHC card in combination
with a card reader that only supports cards up to the MicroSD standard.
(According to Wikipedia MicroSDHC was announced in 2006.)
