I get exactly this same behavior on my Lenovo w520 laptop ever since 14.04.1. There appears to be nothing wrong with the nvidia drivers. The driver hasn't changed and neither has my xorg.conf since the update. If I boot without my external display connected, then after a few seconds I hear the ubuntu "drums" sound event that normally plays whenever the login screen is displayed, but the login screen doesn't show on the built-in display. Only the purple boot screen displays. If I connect my external display, I do see the login screen. Once I authenticate with my external display connected, my built-in display will display the desktop. I've re-installed 14.04 at least 3 times, and I keep getting this behavior. The only way I've been able to avoid it is to NOT do the updates, and that's a security problem.
