I have a workaround for this, use Gnome instead of Unity.

It took me a while to realize/figure out that it's pretty painless to
just run a different window manager on Ubuntu.  I did look at maybe
switching to a different lock screen but there was no straightforward
way to do that.

It turns out you just use apt to install gnome-shell and then from the login 
screen you have the option to run Gnome instead of Unity (click the little icon 
on that line with your name when you're logging in to select the window manager 
you want).
The bug makes Unity so inconvenient to use that I was considering switching to 
another Linux distribution. I don't see any downside to switching to Gnome so 
far, so this seems like a reasonable workaround until the problem is resolved. 
Or maybe forever, I don't care about Gnome vs. Unity and Gnome seems to work 
just fine.
